We knew it would be abused.

Each of us watched our life’s work be poisoned. Corrupted. Tarnished by those in power who claimed to respect their responsibilities while plotting atrocities against those they considered their lessers.

Well, no more.

Enough is enough.

We are finished studying the reefs you poison, the forests you slash, the oceans you choke, the planet you burn. We are finished witnessing and describing the bountiful beauty around us only to watch that recognition become an invitation for its destruction.

That is a burden we will no longer carry.

No more will our labour contribute to your cycles of profit and conquest. No longer will we beg, plead, or debase ourselves for the funding required to do what is necessary for all. No longer will we constrain ourselves according to the approval of those who care neither for us nor for the consequences of what they command.

We, the undersigned, therefore pledge to remove the infrastructures of tyranny and control; to reconstitute the technologies we helped create so that they might serve peace rather than domination; and to work, quietly and without recognition, to remove whatever barriers we can between humanity and a more just and free society.

We understand that what we are about to do carries consequences of its own.

We Are So Sorry

We will seek forgiveness from the innocents we fail to protect, and for the innocence our actions may take from them.

There will be suffering caused by what we do.

There would be far more caused by what we do not.
