What it is
SpriteDex asks what happens when a Pokédex-like interaction model becomes a real ecological field tool: species observations, mapping, identification, encounters, regional collections, rarity, and a playful reason to pay closer attention to the living world.
It is one of the clearest examples of the Root & Render overlap between ecology, interface design, field science, mapping, games, and creative technology.
The design idea
A field tool does not have to feel clinical to be useful. Progress, discovery, collections, maps, encounter history, regional leaderboards, and bioblitz-style events can turn ordinary observation into something closer to exploration while still pointing back toward real species and real ecological knowledge.
The intended long-term direction is to use established citizen-science infrastructure such as iNaturalist rather than building an isolated observation database: discoveries can be playful on the Root & Render side while observations still contribute to useful biodiversity data.
Department integration
SpriteDex can become the field-guide layer inside the Department of Dubious Demarcations. That lets a fictional field department encourage very real species discovery, conservation-area exploration, mapping, and citizen-science participation.
The product remains useful outside the story world; the Department simply gives it another reason to exist and another way for people to encounter it.
Current direction
The existing prototype remains a field-terminal concept and interaction study while the production architecture, iNaturalist integration, regional model, and responsible data flow are designed. It stays a Lab experiment until the real observation workflow is strong enough to deserve a public product.
