Newcastle Port Pulse began as an experiment in making a useful local media service with the scale and personality of a one-person studio.
The idea
The project combines local atmosphere, music, weather, stories, field recordings, and community-minded media into an online radio format. It is also a place to test how a small operation can use automation thoughtfully without sanding away the human parts that make local media interesting.
How it was planned to work
YouTube was chosen as the initial launch point. The first stage was intentionally simple: pre-record programming and release it on a schedule.
From there, the plan was to explore automating recurring information such as weather, traffic, and local updates, eventually creating a more continuous broadcast. Pre-recorded and live segments could then sit alongside those automated pieces to highlight local people, projects, ideas, and creative experiments.
What came next
Basic branding and placeholder accounts were created, and the next milestone became the first actual broadcast.
