What it is
Newcastle Port Pulse is a local media and atmospheric radio-inspired project built around the sounds, weather, stories, places, and everyday texture of Newcastle and the Lake Ontario shoreline.
Its current public surfaces are Instagram and YouTube. The project can grow through music, field recordings, local weather, short stories, ambient broadcasts, video, and other forms of place-based media without needing to pretend it is a conventional terrestrial station.
Why build it
The project is an experiment in making local media feel intimate again — less like a feed optimized for everyone and more like something that could only have come from one particular place.
It also gives Root & Render a living media platform where broadcast design, automation, audio production, visual identity, local storytelling, and creative technology can meet.
The Weepers connection
Newcastle Port Pulse can also become a storytelling surface for The Weepers without losing its real community-media identity. Selected fictional broadcasts, interruptions, archive fragments, or anomalous signals can appear through the same channels people already understand as Port Pulse media.
The important rule is that a Weepers broadcast should add to the story rather than merely advertise it.
Current direction
The current work is focused on repeatable social/audio production, a recognizable local voice, and building enough genuine Newcastle Port Pulse material that future fictional intrusions feel like something entered an existing signal rather than something created only for a campaign.
